What you need to know before you buy Solar Panels

Can I Get A Solar Panel System?

Before you decide to get a solar array there are a number of factors you have to consider as it can be a big deal. There are a number of things that have to be expertly evaluated before you can even consider putting panels on your roof.

First of all, some might have to come out and do a site survey. An engineer will climb up on your roof, take measurements, inspect to see if you have visibility to the south, and use this funky solar pathfinder device to determine the times of day that particular areas would be shaded.

Solar Path finder

They go to the four corners of where the solar array is going to be installed with the Solar Pathfinder, and with it point towards the south it has a series of marks on it and a glass dome which reflects anything that would be throwing a shadow. You basically look at the reflection and see what time of day the shadow might affect that spot.

To get the most out of your panels you need to have them in a pin-point location to work efficiently as possible, you can't just bung them on any old place! Basically this means it must be facing south within about a 20 degree window. If they can’t point the panels in that direction, you might as well not do it because your solar generation drops dramatically. Same goes for shade. If you’ve got a building beside you, or trees that tower over the house, you’re done.

Even if your roof points south, and nothing’s blocking the sun you still need to have an engineering survey done to determine if your roof can bear the additional weight! Luckily, it only adds about 5-6 pounds per square foot of roof loading, so most roofs should be able to take it.

How Big of a Solar Panel System Do I Need?

To some extent figuring out what you need is narrowed down by how much room you have and cost. But you also need to take a look at your previous year’s electric bills, find out what your electric rates are, and research what the projected generation will be for the size of system you’re thinking about.

Here’s a site to let you calculateproduction for your location. Just pick your country and region  You’ll come up with an estimate that looks kind of like this:

Can I Get A Solar Panel System?
ITS A ROYAL PAIN IN THE ARSE

Solar Panel System Tips and Tricks

Oh boy, there is a lot they aren’t telling you! For example, one really good thing is that these systems are mostly guaranteed for 20 years! What isn’t really talked about is that its the solar panels that are warrantied for that long, but the inverters are not. So when you’re doing your ROI calculations you need to include the fact that you’re going to have to spend more money somewhere in the middle of the life-cycle for changing out parts.
Sunny Boy Solar Inverter
Speaking inverters, I should explain that the reason you need an inverter is that the solar panels put out DC current. This is like the current that comes out of a battery. But houses use AC current. So the inverter takes care of the conversion. There are two different kinds of inverters that are currently in use.

Solar MicroInverters

Being dependent on one inverter can be inefficient, if they inverter goes down or has technical problems it means you won't be generating any electricity. An answer to the efficiency problem comes in the form of micro-inverters. Instead of stringing multiple panels together and putting them through one big inverter, micro-inverters are installed on every single solar panel. This allows each panel to contribute 100% of its production to the home, and if one fails it doesn’t affect the output of any others.

Choosing between Inverters and MicroInverters

Each type of inverter has its own benefits. While micro-inverters are more efficient, they are also more costly. It could also mean a lot more wiring that have to be mounted and routed. Yikes! Big inverters might weigh 140 pounds(ish), but they get mounted in one spot and with minimal wiring. They are also extremely reliable, having been around since the beginning of the industry.

Other Things To Keep In Mind

Another thing no one bothered to mention is that the roof on your house generally doesn’t last as long as these systems. So let’s say you have a 10 or 15 year old roof. There is NO WAY it’s going to last as long as the panels. What do you do then? If you have to do any work on the roof you have to deal with the solar array first. Although some companies do provide a service that in the event of your roof needs repairs they will take down the Solar Panels for you for a cheaper price than it would cost originally. If you are worried about this then I would advise to talk about this with a trusted company that will be willing to help you out e.g. the solar company that fitted the panels.

Who’s going to look after the system? And how? I advise to stay at home and participate during the install so you can learn how things are connected, and if something needed minor repairs you could do it yourself. If you have a pitched roof, you probably don’t want to be getting on it to service your panels. So make sure the company you choose has been around a long time so you don’t have to rely on service from someone else.

How Long Does It Take To Install A Solar Panel System?

The good news is that it only takes about a day to a couple of days days for them to be installed on your roof. The bad news is, that the answer isn’t that simple. After we did the site survey and worked out pricing and all that, we had to sign contracts. Those contracts had to get sent off for approval to the electric company because we were going to be tying into the grid. Meanwhile, you have to have the structural engineer come to the house to determine if the roof could bear the weight. All of those things can take weeks to complete.

By the way, if you’re wondering if you can do all this yourself – the answer is no. Next question!

How much do Solar Panels cost?

Obviously Solar Panels range from country to country, region to region but, specifically in the UK (where I just so happen to be from) They are about £5,000-£10,000 but this all depends on the size, quality and quantity of Solar Panels you buy! A website that proved very useful to me was Solar Panel Quoter. They give you a lovely FREE quote from your region specifically and can give you a list of the top 3 companies in your area from their database, how convenient!

Another thing before you are put off by the expensive price, you aren't JUST buying the panels themselves with that money. Its also for the install which is in itself a complicated process witnessing it for yourself you'll understand its worth every penny, just its a lot of pennies!

Your pay back can easily be done over a simple spreadsheet, factoring in the months when the panels will be at either a low or high efficiency. It should be fairly straight forward but on average most solar panel systems make back their money in roughly in half their life times. Which means it is worth getting them, you just need the money to kick-start it! However, if you can afford to do it, it is also a form of insurance against the potential of sky-rocketing energy prices.

This should be about everything you need to consider before installing solar panels. If I have missed anything out or you have any queries, make sure to comment below!

How long will it take for a solar system to pay for itself?

'How long will it take for a solar panel system to pay for itself in the UK' was just one of the areas recently investigated by consumer watchdog Which.

According to a report by Energy Efficiency News, the Which investigation highlighted several short-comings and 'dodgy' sales practises by some solar installation companies.

The Micropower Council has welcomed the investigation and promised to act on those companies that were highlighted in the report as giving poor or incorrect advice.

But it says that although a small number of cowboys attracted to the industry because of it's quick growth, are attempting to 'cash-in', the industry has got off to the best possible start through vigorous self-regulation, the Micro-generation certificate and the industries 'selling code' - the REAl assurance scheme.

Which discovered that some companies were under-estimating pay back periods on installed systems as well as over-estimating likely profits from an installation. On some cases, salesman had recommended siting the panels on the shaded part of the roof, or had failed to take into account the location of the property before calculating likely generation figures.

Installation quotes should be site specific, provide clear information on the life expectancy of a system and the likely cost of replacing faulty panels, reckon Which.

The Micropower Council said "There is no need to mislead consumers by exaggerating the already generous incentives on offer".

When considering any home improvement, it's important to get a range of quotes and advice from different companies and having the time to consider their quotes without pressure.

Using Solar Panel Quoter not only gives you an instant online solar panel quote, but can also recommend up to 3 local companies to follow up your online quote with a free no-obligation written quote, based on your property and system requirements.

Free solar panel quoting service - guest post.

Daily, more and more Solar Panel companies are using Solar Panel Quoter, because they have realised more and more home owners are using our FREE online quoting service.

Thanks to Solar Panel Quoter, homeowners can save a lot of money over a long term period simply by using a natural source of energy, which is non-negligible considering the increase of energy prices.

It's very useful, efficient and the best product for people who care about the environment and the ecology because it is not pollutant. Amongst all the energy sources, the solar energy is the only one that's inexhaustible.

The Solar Panel can last about 25 years (although many current panels are still operational after 30, 35 and even 40 years). It does not emit co2 and is not harmful for the climate nor for the planet.

Moreover, this is THE source of energy to have if you can't benefit from conventional energy sources like mains electricity.

Plus, you can take advantage of our free local company matching service to find the best companies installing in your area. (Price Engines were the first company to introduce online prices for the double-glazing Industry with Window Quoter, over 10 years ago).

Solar Panels, once installed, require little maintenance and the energy is produced without any further intervention. It is quiet and non-disturbing for the neighbours, unlike other sources of energy e.g wind turbines.

Solar Panels are a great long term investment for individual home owners.

Church 'aspires' to be carbon neutral

The BBC reported how a church in Newbury has become the latest to join a handful of other C of E churches, joining the race to become carbon neutral.

They've just fitted 129 solar panels amongst other energy saving insulation work to the roof.

But with some 16,200 other C of E churches in the UK, there are many more that could be benefiting both themselves and the environment.

The Newbury church - St George the Martyr - says the 129 solar panels can produce (at peak) 25 kilowatts.

The church currently consumes 9,000 kilowatts a year but the solar panels are expected to produce around 20,000 kilowatts per year.

That equates to an income for the church of around £7000 to £8000 a year from electricity sold back to the grid.

The solar panels cost the church £80,000.

Are free solar panel installation schemes a good idea? Article update.

Free Solar Panel Installation Offers - UPDATE

There's been much hype in the national media recently about companies offering free solar panels and installation. One company in particular is quoted as aiming to offer free solar panels to 2.5 million homes in the UK.

Of course, there is usually a qualifying criteria - for example which part of the UK you live in, the amount of available roof space, the direction that roof points in and whether the roof is shaded by overhanging trees or structures on your own or neighbouring property are all taken into account besides other criteria unique to that particular company.

What do you gain from a free installation?

For a start, the solar panels and their installation is carried out free of charge to yourself. Once the installation is complete, you get to enjoy the daytime energy cost savings for using your own produced energy.

You'll also benefit from a hoped for increase in your property's value should you decide to sell it at some point in the future. The 'deal' stays with the property rather than the owner so everything is just transferred to the new owner.

After 25 years, you'll also own the panels out-right. (25 years being the normal period of such agreements).

The money you would have spent on the installation can either say in your savings or be used to fund another home improvement etc.

What do you loose by having a free solar panel installation?

You'll forfeit any subsidies or grants payable to yourself for the installation and any excess energy which is 'sold back' to the national grid will be credited to the company that 'own' the panels rather than you the homeowner. Think of it as letting your roof to a 3rd party for their own financial gain.

If you do sell your property before the end of the agreement, prospective buyers may be put off by the 'taking over' of an agreement they weren't originally involved in. There could be extra legal hurdles to jump through to complete a sale. Some people have reported having to remove panels to attract a buyer.

You may own the panels outright after 25 years (or whatever the agreement period is for) but you'll then be responsible for their maintenance and replacement of failed units if you want to continue enjoying the energy savings they produce.

(It should be noted that although todays panels are usually rated to last for 25 years, many perform for 5 or 10 years afterwards without replacement).

We haven't seen anything that outlines who's financially responsible for the panels i.e house insurance cover in case they're damaged by fire, structural collapse or storm damage etc. We're assuming faulty panels would be replaced by the installer f.o.c? Worth asking if you get the opportunity.

Remember there's no such thing as a free lunch

Most independent consumer watchdogs are warning homeowners to explore such free panel offers with their "eyes wide open". Remember there's no such thing as a 'free lunch'.

Some have gone further by comparing the cost savings of a free panel scheme compared with taking a 10 year personal loan for your own installation and enjoying all the rebates and tariffs. Unsurprisingly, the figures came out in favour of funding your own installation.

Indeed, some believe we could soon see these 'free-fitting' companies starting to offer extra incentives like cash sums up front or a share of the energy generated profits as more of these companies spring up around us. They'll all be chasing the same housing stock / addresses after all.

Free solar panel installations still have a place

However, that option may not be available to everyone, so the free panel schemes do have an important part to play in the mass uptake of renewable energy generation in the UK. if you're approached by a free solar panel 'deal' company, after getting their figures, why not use Solar Panel Quoter to get up to 3 independent quotes in writing from other local solar panel installation companies and draw your own comparisons.

Either way, early uptake of either a free panel offer or installing your own system is essential if you're to make the most of the rebates and energy tariffs. We've already seen other european countries reducing their tariff levels (which apply to new applicants after the tariff change), claiming financial ruin if they keep them at their inception levels, such is the popularity of such schemes. Remember, the feed-in tariff scheme is fixed at 25 years starting from this April (2010) just gone, and applies to photovoltaic (electricity generating) installations only.

You'll find more information and news stories on renewable energy on our popular daily renewable energy blog - and free installation schemes in our recent blog post: click here to read their free solar panels article.

Advice is to 'be wary' of free solar panels offers

Just last week, a solar panel company announced on national radio a scheme to install solar panels for free on 100,000 qualifying homes in the UK.

They're not the first and doubtless will be the last as these companies realise the investment and earnings potential, fuelled by the Governments feed-in tariffs for photovoltaic solar energy production.

However, as Renewable Energy World reminds homeowners, quoting a passage from an article in the Guardian newspaper, homeowners should approach these free solar panel schemes with their "eyes wide open".

For example, homeowners, even after taking a 10 year loan in consideration, could save three times the amount on their energy bills compared to the same period on a typical free solar panels scheme.

Of course, the solar panel companies are bearing all the risk - their money is actually paying for the panels and the installation in return for the subsidies and feed-in tariff amounts on energy produced.

However, with the recent news that Spain had cut its feed-in tariffs, following on from Germany and Italy, then it's not unreasonable to suspect that at some point there may be a forced similar cut in UK tariffs, which could alter the situation and leave the homeowner the winner rather than the solar companies.

Read the full article here which includes a downloadable fact sheet of 24 questions to ask before you agree to a free solar panel installation agreement.

Renewable Energy Quotes - online prices for solar panel installation

renewable energy quotes - solar panels click here
Surely one of the most popular renewable energy quotes sought by homeowners is for solar panel installation on a home or business.

Aided by the recent Feed-in Tariffs scheme whereby those installing photovoltaic (electricity generating) solar panels can now get paid for the amount of energy they produce including any surplus they put back into the National Grid.

A similar scheme - Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is due to start in 2011 which will address solar hot water panels, ground source heat pumps etc.

Whilst there is conflicting stories from both sides on the real pay-back period for such installations and that 'pay-back' figure has been aided greatly by the new tariffs, as I was reading somewhere recently it's worth remembering that renewable energy 'does' have a payback period.

Unlike continuing to use existing energy suppliers where bills will only continue to rise.

It's important to choose a reputable company to handle your installation and a good place to start is Solar Panel Quoter. Start by entering your location details and the type of solar panel installation you're interested in and our clever website will try and give you an online price guide there and then.
